About us
Hair. It defines who we are in our eyes and shapes others’ perceptions of us. We are classified as bald or bushy or thinning or luxuriant when it comes to our hair. Hair sits predominantly on top of our heads providing little but cosmetic adornment, yet poems, songs, and stories are written about hair. Children learn about the folk story of Rapunzel who let down her long golden hair for her suitor to climb into her tower of imprisonment. We sing about Sampson in the Old Testament of the Bible who lost his strength when he was tricked into allowing Delilah to cut his hair. We remember the O’Henry story The Gift of the Magi where the wife cut her lovely long hair to purchase a pocket watch chain for her husband, while the husband sold his pocket watch to purchase some beautiful combs for his wife’s long hair. We marvel at the irony of the woman who loved her husband so much that she cut her precious hair.

It is interesting to note that humans are the only higher level mammalian society where scalp hair is considered desirable. In the power hierarchy of the adult ape, the most senior ape is identified by the fact that his pate is bald! His lack of scalp hair indicates that he is the oldest ape and his life experiences are used by the rest of the younger apes to guide the group through the dangerous forest safely. Sociological experiments have been done where a toupee is placed on the bald eldest ape and the clan no longer follows his lead. Somehow, in our society, we value the youthful appearance of scalp hair more than the wisdom that accompanies baldness. This has led to the development of medications to prevent baldness, hair addition techniques, and a variety of wigs. These methods of treating baldness also become a part of the cosmetic arena surrounding hair.

Hair seems to be a fascination. We cut it, style it, curl it, straighten it, lighten it, darken it, comb it, wash it, dry it, and cry about it. Hair is the topic of this website.
